Author Guidelines

We warmly invite authors to submit their work to the Journal of Applied Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment (JAAIBE). Submissions are first reviewed by an editor to ensure they align with the journal’s aims and scope. Manuscripts that are a good fit will then undergo peer review to evaluate their quality and contribution to the field.

Before submitting, please ensure that you have permission to include any third-party material, such as images, documents, or datasets. All listed authors must consent to be identified as contributors, and, where relevant, research should have approval from an appropriate ethics committee in line with local regulations.

Editors may desk-reject submissions that do not meet the journal’s minimum quality standards. To give your work the best chance of success, please ensure that:

  • Your study design and research argument are clearly structured and articulated.
  • The title is concise, and the abstract is self-contained and informative.

Once you are confident your submission meets these standards, please follow the checklist below to prepare your manuscript for submission. We look forward to receiving your contribution!

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions should meet the following requirements before submission:

  • This manuscript complies with the guidelines outlined on Prepare Your Manuscript.
  • The work has not been previously published and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • All references are accurate and complete.
  • All tables and figures are clearly numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained for any photos, datasets, or other third-party material included in the submission.
  • The manuscript file is fully anonymized for double-blind peer review and contains no author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, or identifying information (including file metadata).

Research Articles

Research Articles report original and substantial research contributions on the development, application, and evaluation of artificial intelligence methods in the built environment. Submissions should present clear research questions, methodological rigor, and evidence-based findings relevant to architecture, construction, urban systems, or infrastructure, i.e. built environment.

Technical Notes

Technical Notes are concise contributions that focus on specific methods, tools, workflows, datasets, or early-stage results related to AI applications in the built environment. Emphasis is placed on practical insight, technical clarity, and reproducibility rather than comprehensive evaluation.

Case Studies

Case Studies document real-world applications of artificial intelligence in the built environment, including design, construction, operation, and urban management. Submissions may report successful deployments as well as challenges, limitations, and lessons learned from practice.

Perspectives

Perspectives provide critical, reflective, or forward-looking viewpoints on the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the built environment. Contributions may address ethical, societal, policy, educational, or industry-related implications and are expected to stimulate discussion rather than present original empirical research.

Reviews and Surveys

Reviews & Surveys synthesize and critically assess existing literature on topics related to AI in the built environment. Submissions should provide structured overviews, identify trends and gaps, and offer guidance for future research and practice.
